Winners & Chia Pets

Hey guys! Thanks again so much for celebrating my authorial blurbs with the giveaway. Congrats to the three winners:

Sheri Larsen
Jaime Morrow
Ashley Jellison (who really earned this--she tweeted every single day!)

And now, on to chia seeds.

So they're a relatively new thing in healthy eating. I know, I know...can you hear the ads right now?

"Ch-ch-ch-CHIA PETS!"

If I knew there was a Hello Kitty one, I'd have bought that instead of the pig.
Click here if you have to own this. Now.

Okay, so who owned one?

*raises hand*

So I was surprised to find chia seeds all over my local Whole Foods in the last few years. I stayed away, until I read up a little more. Some surprising facts:

  • Chia is native to Mexico and Guatemala
  • It was cultivated by the Aztecs as a major food source, as important as maize
  • Seeds are tiny, smaller than sesame seeds
  • Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, fiber, protein, calcium, iron, zinc, and niacin.
So I'm not recommending that you eat a pound of chia seeds every day. I just wanted to tell you that lately I've been adding them to my cereal and stuff...

...and I can't get that damn song out of my head.

Anyways. Happy Thursday, and congrats again to the winners!

I don't believe I ever owned one. And I didn't know you could eat it either.

Congrats to the lucky winners!

Don't know if I could eat Chia - too many bad commercials over the years! :)

Congrats to the winners. We eat chia seeds too. I sprinkle them on salads. And I give them to my puppy on her food once a day. They're supposed to be really good for you.

A chia pet once haunted my nightmares -- but that's a sad story. :-) Congrats to the winners. I haven't seen the seeds here but we are a backward people down here!

I actually bought a bag of chia seeds not too long ago to put in smoothies. They're totally weird and slimy! (But I knew they were good for you, so that's why I bought them.)

Thanks again for the awesome giveaway, Lydia! I'm really looking forward to reading ORIGIN. :D

I remember seeing commercials when I was a kid, but my mom never let me have one! I don't know why.

I remember having on... a sheep or something?

The 'Hello Kitty' one is awesome, though I would prefer Jiji (from Kiki's Delivery Service).

I throw chia seeds in breakfast shakes with spinach, blueberries, canned pumpkin, protein powder, & a dash of nutmeg & cinnamon. Oh, and some ground flax too. Pretty tasty, and very refreshing in the morning :)

Oh, my gosh! I forgot all about Chia Pets! Yes, I'll raise my hand because I had one, too. Though eating Chia? I don't know...

I always wondered if the Chia pet seeds were edible. How do the seeds taste? Do they have a nutty flavor?

Slamdunk said...

Never had one but the Mrs. confesses to having one many years ago. Oh man, that song is contagious...

I had one! A friend gave me one of Homer Simpson, which was ridiculous since he's supposed to be bald. It's pretty cool that they're edible. I hadn't heard that before.

And now I can't get the song out of my head either.

I rarely even eat sunflower seeds - reserving that for salads when eating out.

My mom got into Chia's for a while when I was a kid. They're cute; but I can't even grow those. Total brown thumb.

Never saw any of the sea monkeys either.

I owned one! It was a Bugs Bunny.

I never dreamed they'd be edible!

Congratulations to the winners. Never tasted Chia seeds.

I've tried them before - not bad tasting. They're supposed to help with acid reflux, if you chew like a tablespoon of them, since they soak up whatever you put them in (stomach acid included apparently).

Never owned one, maybe because I'm in Australia??
