Un-Virtualizing Friends

Happy Monday!

So this past weekend I was visiting family and managed to squeeze in a meeting with two amazing authors I've befriended online in the last year.

Look!

On the left is Elisabeth Dahl, author Genie Wishes (coming April 2 by Abrams/Amulet). In the middle is Elle Cosimano, author of Nearly Gone (coming March 2014 by Kathy Dawson Books/Penguin). On the right is a small person being eaten by a shapeless down coat.

Oh wait, that's me.

Random fact: Elisabeth and I attended the same, small high school (different years though) and found out we were both coming out with books this year. Small world, right?

Both of these talented authors have been my online friends for the last year or so, and when I had the chance to meet them in person, I was pretty psyched.

The truth is, I have a lot of online friends--my blog friends, crit partners, other debut authors, and various people in the industry I've "met" over the last several years, but this is the first time I've met anybody face to face! (Part of this reason is where I live and my constant avoidance of conferences, which will hopefully disappear this year.)

So. Have you "un-virtualized" your online friends?
Who? I'd love to know!

Awwww lovely Lydia!!! What a fab coincidence that Elisabeth went to the same school as you and that you are both authors too!! Yay!

Congrats too to Elle too!!

Take care

That's a great thing, to be able to put a real body with one you've been communicating with.

I haven't met anyone yet I know in blogland, but it would be fun~

How awesome Lydia. No, I have not met an online friend yet, though I'd love to.

I did go to Carrie Harris' book signing recently and discovered we live in the same town. I'm so excited and we're going to go have coffee some day soon.

I met Christine Danek and KM Walton online first, and then met them in person. And I have plans to meet up with Melissa Sarno when I go to NYC this spring to research the setting of my next book.

Sadly, I have not yet met my CPs Marcy Hatch (Maine) or Krystalyn Drown (Florida) in person, but I hope to, some day!

I have not met an online friend. I fear it will be hard to do so because of where I live. It'd be fun to do so though.

How fun! I'm glad you had a good time meeting friends face-to-face.

I've never met on-line friends face-to-face. :(

Two of my very dearest friends are individuals I've never met in person. We keep talking about planning a get-together, but we are scattered all across the United States, and all of us have young kids, so travel is problematic at best. Maybe in another ten years we'll manage that meet-up.

So glad you got to meet some of your friends in real life!

I do know a couple of my online friends well in person, but that's because we met first, then began our online interactions. But I have met some great people only online. So cool that you got to meet in person!

It was SO lovely to see you in person, Lydia. (I was totally admiring that "shapeless" down coat, BTW.)

Amazing how the world seems to be shrinking as I get older, and yet it still never feels small enough. I miss you both already! Until next time.

I've met a bunch of writers I used to only know on the internet. First it was WFC 2011 in San Diego, but after that, I had the courage to start meeting up with local writers too.

Oh, and I met Sarah Fine in Boston when I was there. That was awesome.

Perfect timing. I'm heading south later this week to visit online bud Maria Zannini, and we'll be joined by Angela Brown - both first time "in person" meets.

I just had the opportunity of un-virtualizing writer friends recently too! I went to SCBWI in NYC and got to meet some wonderful ladies in real life that I'd been communicating with on the blogs and Twitter for many months. It was fantastic! I'm glad you got to do the same thing. :)

I can't wait to meet my online writing friends in person! Two are even my CPs; I especially hope to meet them soon.

How totally fun. All my virtual friends are still virtual.

Fun stuff! I've met a few online friends in person. Actually two belong to my local writing group. I can't usually make the meetings (time conflict) but have met them at our local conferences. Two other blogging friends and I communicate via text and phone, and hope to meet someday soon.

Jaime beat me to it--we met each other just recently at SCBWI NY, as well as some other blogger/writer friends. (I also met a bunch of people there whose blogs I still have to look up from the many cards I collected!)

I actually met my high school best friend online, back in the days of Yahoo!Groups. My mother would never have let me even call her on the phone--except that we discovered she lived in my grandmother's town and we had a family friend in common! So. wild.

I think you look awesome! I'd love to meet my online friends, but as of yet, I have not met a single one. (I am also not a conference goer.)

That's cool you got to meet them!
Don't let that coat bite.

So far I've only gotten to meet Hart in person, at one of her book signings last year. There are so many I'd love to meet though, yourself included. Maybe someday! <3

Afraid not. There aren't many authors from the blogging community near Ohio. I'm hoping to change that this summer, though! :)

It is so fun to meet online writing buds in person! Because they really "get" the writing world.
I've met a few in person (and always so amazing!) and would love to meet more (including you!).

Ah, so cool! I'm always nervous AND excited at the prospect of meeting online friends in Real Life. I've un-virtualized a few online friends, Sophia being the one I mention most on the blog since we actually just hang out now, haha. I also was lucky enough to meet my online friend Linda over the winter holidays. It's weird because we apparently had the same circle of friends in college but somehow never met each other there!

Hope to un-virtualize you some day! ;)

How fun!

I haven't, but my brother married a girl he met online. And they're still married, 15 years later!

I met Matt MacNish and Kristen Wixted, among a few other lovely people, last year, and my hope for this year is that I will un-virtualize YOU.

Sophia Chang said...

haha I was going to say of course Krispy and Alz and I are the epic IN REAL LIFE meetup - and she already said it awww :)

nice post, Lydia. I unvirtualised Emma Pass last year, and it was wonderful.

I was fortunate enough to meet Michael DiGesu last year in Florida while visiting my mom but I've yet to meet any of my CPs and I really really want to! Especially Dianne who is the best at bringing out the best in me.

So glad you were able to un-virtualize your friends :)

Awesome Dr.--I am glad that you got to meet.

No, being an anonymous blogger does have disadvantages.

I met three online friends in the flesh when I presented at the Push to Publish conference last fall at Rosemont College. It was big fun!!!! I'm pumped to meet more virtual buddies.

Must have been tons of fun.
I have yet to un-virtualize an online friend but maybe when I manage to go to a conference one day? who knows? :)
