Wednesday Tidbits

Why is Wed-nes-day pronounced Wendsday?

Why is ophthalmologist spelled so impossibly? Couldn't it have been EyeBallologist?

Just thinking, er, blogging out loud.

I'm still on vacation, so apologies for not being able to stop by blogs this week. A few notes:

  • This Friday the lovely Shelley Thomas is my Author being spotlit (why does that sound odd?)
  • And in one week my 900 Followers Contest is over. So please TweetFacebookGooglePlusVandalizeTheInternet as needed to get the word out!
  • Today is Deb Salibury's turn to answer the Sisterhood of the Traveling Blog question: Do you have a Genre-Crush? Check out previous answers by Laura, myself, and Sarah!
Have a great WENDSDAY. (Typing that felt so wrong.)

English often boggles my mind. Hope you're enjoying your time off and look forward to what you have in store for us.

Our English/Welsh Border names are a problem to my American friends when they visit. We have Leominster, pronounced Lemster, Kangerford, pronounced Kanjford and many many more....

I live in Massachusetts. Try pronouncing Worcester as "Wooster," and how do you think they came up with the town name "Braintree," then think of an image that matches the name! Hope you are having a great vacation.

looking forward to my spotlittedness.

I think they don't call it the eyeball doctor because gynecologists and proctologists would have a rougher time getting business if everyone simplified their names.

I vote for your modern spelling! Let's just do away with spelling! (Can you tell I've been back at work as an English teacher for two days now?)

Because of Woden.

900 Followers. Insanity! You've come a long way since I started following you. Way to go!

Your questions have a point. I couldn't spell that word to save my life. Spelling Bee of death? That gives me an idea!

Darn that old English. I pretty sure D is a glottal stop consonant, which really doesn't help, so let's just not pronounce it. That's the rationale, I suspect.

Everything's more official in Latin, didn't you know? If I ever become a doctor, I'll call myself Julius Maximus instead of Jill. Have a great vacation.

I've always wondered that about Wednesday. :) Hope you're having fun on your vacay!

Enjoy your vacation. Life has a nasty way of taking charge. Break those chains and take control of your life back -- just relax when you can. I miss you, but I would miss you more if you became ill from overwork and stress! Roland

Bet those kids in the National spelling bee could spell ophthalmologist!

Excellent point. Language is so weird. Sometimes I just walk around barefoot muttering 'Wed Nes Day' over and over.

Hah! I shall only refer to ophthalmologists as eyeballogists from now on. ;) Enjoy yourself!

I've always wondered about the spelling of Wednesday. One of these days I'll have to look that up.

Ha, yes, I never did get that silent "D" in Wednesday. Maybe we are just sloppy in our pronunciation these days, however, and it USED to be pronounced. Who knows! And woo--you have 930 now! Whaddya gonna do when you reach 1000? ;o)

I've always had an issue with Wednesday. :) Enjoy your Vacay!

Always wondering that about Wednesday! I think it's because the day is named after a Greek God, or something... smart... like that?

Where did the "r" in Warshington come from?
The libary, of course.

my first joke, I was 8.
