Author Spotlight: Shelley Moore Thomas

Welcome to this week's Author's Spotlight featuring Shelley Moore Thomas. Don't you just lurve that tiara? Anyway, enough about my jewel-envy.

What is the most distracting thing that happens when you're working on a book?

Um…everything! I mean, I work full time and have three kids, so just about everything that happens is a distraction from writing. Thus, I have to be very good about being able to write in unusual places, because I never know when I might get the chance to crank out a scene or a few lines. I carry a notebook with me everywhere I go, just in case. (I actually wrote one of my picture books whilst waiting in the car for my daughter to finish her catechism class.) I also write during my lunch time at work.

But, because I lead a life filled with distractions, I am very lenient with myself. I get done what I can, and that will have to do. I can’t make more hours in the day.

Pen, pencil, or typing?

Yes. All three, depending on where I am and what my mood is.

How do you keep notes on the future projects swimming in your brain?

I keep an “idea page” in my writing notebook as a place to list new little things that buzz through my brain. If the idea just won’t leave me alone, I open a word document in my computer and try to get down all I can so that the information will be there when I decide to go back to it. Mostly, the notes are very rambly and confusing, but sometimes I can understand them.

Which Harry Potter House would they be sorted into?

Hufflepuff. Oh yes, though I might long for Gryffindor, I know that truly I am Hufflepuff. And I’m okay with it.

(That's okay. Because in addition to being the most loyal, it is less widely known that Hufflepuffians can dance a mean salsa. Really. Didn't you know that???)

The sixth adventure of the Good Knight and his dragon friends. This time, it's a road trip!

I have to agree with the fact that everything seems to be a distraction. I'm studying for a full-time degree and scraping out time is write is exhausting. Although there's nothing else I'd rather be doing.
Love the tiara!
And the book cover :)

Send some of those extra ideas my way!

Isis Rushdan said...

I keep my ideas on notecards, but I like the idea of a notebook a bit better.

I wish I could write in a notebook, but I get too distracted with other things! So for me, it's typing, typing, typing.

Fun interview! Thanks for introducing me to Shelley. Have a great weekend! :)

I am amazed at Shelley with 3 kids and a teaching job, she still cranks out those books!
My kids and I love her Good Knight series!

Bee-I know! I lead a life of distraction!

Alex-No way! I need all of the ideas I can wrap my little brain around. Some end up never panning out, you know?

Isis-I like the notebook because then I am less likely to lose it. (but of course, I have lost one or two in the past. And I cried.

Jess-I bring my lap top lots of places with me, so I am often typing as well. Sometimes it depends on the story which method of writing I will use.

Karen-Nice to meet you, too!

Kelly-Hi! Thank you! I still can't believe I actually got to meet you in Chicago(ish)and that you were exactly like I imagined you to be!

Hi Shelley! Cool interview, and anyone out there reading comments, "A Good Knight's Rest" is AWESOME. Buy it now!

Oh, and I did one of the gazillion Harry Potter sorting quizzes online and am also a Hufflepuff :)

Thanks Lydia!

Cute tiara. Very 'I am pixie, hear me sprinkle.'

Yay for tiaras and having an ideas page - I think that's such a good idea and I may steal that. LOL!!

Thank you Shelly and Lydia for the interview! Take care

Storyqueen, you are a super woman! (Just like Lydia!)I struggle with "finding time" to write and I'm an empty nester, and stay at home writer! Obviously, I know it's my inner struggle, and some days are better than others! My goal is to begin writing EVERY day, not just when I "feel" like it!

It was nice to meet Shelley! I love the idea page in a notebook. I've got to start doing that! Best of luck with your novel, I'll be checking it out.

Krispy said...

And I thought I had lots of distractions! I have no more excuses! :P

Thanks ladies for the great interview!

Wow, full time work and kids too. Good for you, Shelley, in being disciplined enough to write in addition! And your book looks SO cute. Love the illustrations. Best of luck with your Fall 2012 book, and thanks Lydia for the interview. :)

Congratulations, Shelley! I love your author photo.

I loved the interview. It's wonderful that you're getting all these great ideas and disctractions aren't keeping them from coming in. Ditton on the Hufflepuff. :)

Shelley had me at 'I can't make more hours in the day.' I'm stealing that for when my kids make impossible demands :-)

I do, I do, I do lurve that tiara and Shelley and you, Lydia. This is such a fun interview. Both of you ladies amaze me.

Emily-Every occasion is a good one for a tiara!

Bossy B-I kind of have no choice...or I could give up writing, which is something I really don't want to do.

Suze-Hoping the good idea pixie gives me a sprinkle or two.

OK-Steal away! I am sure I stole it from someone else. I steal lots of stuff...kind of.

Becky-Actually, it's a little easier to find time when your schedule is packed because you know if you don't do it in the tiny window of opportunity, it won't get done. Give me a big chunk of time and I'm far less productive.

Heather-Thank you! I am excited, even though it is a year away.

Krispy-everyone has distractions these days...I just end up not paying attention to many things--which is not always good.

Carol-Me??Disciplined?? Hahahahaha. But I am just crazy enough to want to write my ideas into words.

Connie-Thank you! My daughter took it in our backyard. I love b and w photos.

Laila-Hufflepuffs, unite!! (I mean, we did get Cedric diggory, right?)

Sarah-Maybe we need Hermoine's time turner!

Tricia-Hi! Hope things are going well. Miss you in blogland!
