Killing Time and Bunnies

This week's Sisterhood of the Traveling Blog question comes from Laura, who posted last week.

If you’re querying now, or have in the past, how do you develop patience to wait for responses?

Er, what's patience?

I'll be honest. I try to write a new WIP to take my mind off things and catch up on beta reads.

But this most recent querying episode has been particularly hard for me. I resolved to clean my house to take my mind off things. As in, reorganize every drawer, cabinet, room, and I've gathered up about 20 ginormous bags of donation stuff and have fought the dust bunnies TO THE DEATH.

(I think I won. But the dust bunny zombies are probably coming to get me soon.)

Does it help with the stress of waiting? Not really. But my house is sparkling. :)

Stay tuned for next week's post by Sarah Fine!

I like the cleaning the house idea. I'd probably throw my phone in a lake and take a vacation to get my mind off things. Lol

Hi Lyds-

I feel less alone reading this post. Loved it. Thanks.

Waiting is the hardest part.

I clean too when I need to take my mind off of things. Dust bunnies are my nemesis.:)

Aw, at least you have a clean house! I really wish I was one of those people who could do constructive things like cleaning while waiting. Instead, I avoid it. All the time. Dust bunnies LOVE me.

ROFL! Hurray for the extinction of dust bunnies!

And wishing you success in the query battle.

Waiting is horrible. What's a writer to do? We need friends to whine to and play with! Starting a new WIP is the best, but I only know that because one time I actually tried, and it was fun. Mostly I just wait, but dustbunnies just got put on my To Do list.

The waiting is the hardest part... Glad you are making the most of it.

Come clean my closets! And my shameful pantry!! I have no plan. I just plunge into a new project.

I am going to be querying soon. The waiting is going to kill me, I will catch up with all my reading and start a new MS.

I clean house, garden, and write. And when it's still too much, Cabernet and chocolate.

Hey, at least it's a productive way of stressing out. I usually end up on the couch, watching entire seasons of TV shows in a straight run while eating Red Vines & guzzling Diet Dr. Pepper.

Yeah, I'm a fatty. :P

I can usually find something to fill the time, like playing my guitar or reading or computer games. Cleaning the house only happens when I'm also stressed!

I usually just keep writing. It usually takes so long to hear anything, I eventually forget about it. But my heart always races when opening email ... looking.

Ugh, waiting is so hard! It's nice to have the time to get organized, but I, too, find the best way to deal with impatience is to start another writing project.

Ugh, I HATE waiting...but I think I hate cleaning more, LOL!

Great job turning angst into a positive thing. ;)

Ooo! Good idea. I should take note of that. But really, other writing is the only thing that REALLY takes my mind off the interminable waiting. Best of luck as you (clean and) wait!

Jessie Humphries said...

Maybe I need to query just to get my house clean. But until then, the dust bunnies might as well build a house of their own. Good luck.

Whew, glad you were referring to dust bunnies! Also, the bright side is your house is cleaner & people will benefit from your donations.

OK, time to work on your next book!

I'm not stressing about waiting only because I haven't queried in a while. When I was though, I'd start writing something else or editing the more-than-a-few books that need attention. Still, your house has gotta be cleaner than mine right now. Mind taking a trip over to Jamaica? :D

Better hope that's not the rabbit from Monty Python's Holy Grail!

I find some odd, odd projects around the house too. One nice thing about doing this for a while is that I've gotten much better about waiting. A new project is a must!

I bet my hubby wishes I'd take a break and wait to hear. Nope, I'm always off writing the next story.

I haven't done much querying, but yeah while I'm waiting on feedback/crits/word from an agent (I do have SOME experience there) I will work on some other project, preferably one I am in love with!

Your picture made me smile!

Querying was awful for me. I felt on edge all the time, and I couldn't write anything except micro flash fiction, because I couldn't concentrate on anything that took me longer than an hour to write. I did a lot of reading during my stint in Query Hell - it was the only thing that kept me sane. And there's nothing like a good book to remind you why you want to do this crazy thing in the first place. :)

I LOVE that picture. Cracked me up because I do feel like strangling something when I'm impatiently waiting. LOL

Great pic. And glad your house is sparkling clean. Me, I pull all the heads off my kids dolls. Just kidding.

Dust bunny zombies...LOL! I've often thought of them that way also. I write a new novel while I query otherwise I'd go nuts. Not that I've sent any more queries...hmm...kind of lazy on that front. :P

Karen Lange said...

Wow, so my house will be clean after I query, huh? I need to keep that in mind and make more progress on the WIP! Thanks for the tip! :)

Yup, I've been killing some time today, in air ports (Stockholm and St Petersburg). Waiting is not too bad, actually. I read and write and read some more >:)

LOVE the picture! I'm about to start querying and honestly, your way sounds like a pretty darn good way to distract yourself. Especially since after getting my ms ready, my house REALLY NEEDS IT.

julie fedderson said...

Lydia, I had no idea you had such a violent streak. Poor fluffy zombie bunnies, they will find you in your sleep and eat your brains.

Leslie Rose said...

The pic is TOO FUNNY. I over-organize when I am in the query waiting room. I mean seriously, how many ways can you order colored post-its?
