Writing Goals for 2011

Hello all. This month's Sisterhood of the Traveling Blog topic is writing goals for 2011.

I have to say, this comes with a lot of fear and embarrassment, because if I fail spectacularly in my resolutions, it's out there for all to see.

Kind of like visible panty lines, or spinach-riddled teeth. None pleasant to look at, but most unpleasant for the said possessor of the unpleasantness.

Okay, here goes.

1. I am going to finish my current WIP by the end of January, revise and query it soon after if my crit partners say it's not complete garbage.

2. While querying that piece, I'm going to start outlining a new WIP and have it written by June. If this trajectory works out, that leaves room for a third WIP in the summer/fall.

3. I'm going to publish at least two poems to journals and get one non-fiction piece published (okay, I'm cheating here, because I already know I have one accepted to a journal for early 2011. Whatev, I can cheat.)

4. Finish interviewing my parents for a family history project I started (gulp) five years ago.

And lastly,

5. (*whispers*) Get an agent.

There. I said it. Somehow putting it out there feels like jinxing myself, which is odd because I'm not that superstitious. Well, er. Maybe a little.

Anywho, if you didn't get a chance, check out Laura's post last week, and next week we'll welcome to our newest Sister, Sarah Fine!

You can do it, Lydia! It's ok to say it out loud. Plus ... why would you put yourself through querying if you didn't want an agent? And now that you have said it, we can all root for you!

Great goals. Goals setting is so important, motivating us when otherwise we'd sit on the couch and eat chips...or a fat bowl of ice cream.

I just set goals for this year, too. Even made a badge for it for others to partake. It's more of inner goals, though. About believing and striving forward and helping other writers. Check it out if you'd like.

Yay for you and resolutions! I do think if you put it out there, you're going to feel the need to be accountable and actually DO IT! I believe in you!

Christine Danek said...

Go Lydia! You can do it. I will check out the links too.
Good luck!

Is there a reason you made the "get an agent" option in smaller writing? Don't be afraid of it girl. Say it loud and proud.

"I WILL get an agent in 2011!!"

Whoohoo!! YOU CAN DO IT!! :D Those are some big, big goals but you are a very talented and motivated person, I know that by the end of 2011 we'll all be cheering you on over what you accomplish. :)

Best of luck!

Just wanted to speak up and let you know that I'm wishing you the best of luck in your goals for this year, especially with the search for an agent!! You can totally achieve these goals... The Ducks Guy has faith in you. :)

Wow you have some lofty goals that make my head hurt! I wish I could write that fast, but I definitely have faith in you! And the picture is awesome! I hope you drew that yourself!

I think it's so funny how you put #5 in small print. Yes, I feel that way too. But what wonderful goals you have!

And I love that you're open about them. You do wear a lot of hats, don't you?

The Happy Whisk said...

Great goals and fun too. Best of luck and joy, in reaching them.

#3- Of course you can cheat! It's your list!

(Sometimes when I make a list of stuff I am going to do, I put things on I have already done, just so I can check it off....shhhhh.)

Love your goals. You can do it!

My goals are very similar to yours this year!
Except for the family thing that sounds like a fabulous idea. Your fam will certainly appreciate the work you put into that!!!
Good luck, Lydia!!!

My goals are similar, so let's cheer each other on!

What a great goal to get published in forums not involving a novel!

Wow! You have some major goals, but I know you can do it, because...well, gosh...look at all you've already accomplished in your life!! Thanks for sharing and giving me more motivation!

Carol Kilgore said...

Stick to those goals and don't give up. Remember...we're all watching :)

Oh, wow, you're going to have such an epic year! And that's so cool that you're doing a family history project! I want to explore my dad's side of the family more--maybe I'll make that my resolution this year! You can do it!!!

Jennee said...

Great goals! Best of luck! One of my goals this year is to find an agent too and I feel like I'm cursing myself every time I mention it. Gotta have faith!

Stina Lindenblatt said...

Sounds like my goals. It's great falling in love with a new wip while querying your other one. :D

Melissa Gill said...

Those are great goals. I wish I could revise fast enough to get more than one project finished a year. But so much to do, so little time.

JEM said...

Wow, that's ambitious! I set some writing goals for myself last night, but it was only to complete out the first draft of my current WIP. And I gave myself until mid-Feb. And I haven't even thought about the miles of revision it will need, or querying. I'm starting to feel bad about my goals now...damn you high-achieving peoples :)!

Best of luck! I wish you success in your goals!

Colene Murphy said...

Yay for you!!! I think researching your family history is gonna be amazing!!! Wow!!

Take care

One of my favorite quotes says, "Always aim for the moon. Even if you miss, you'll land among the stars." Even when big goals are scary, or you don't quite make it completely, the process of trying can be almost as rewarding.

Good luck!

Major goals! Don't worry. The whole out in the open for everyone to see failure thing is a great source of MOTIVATION. :) At least, I find this is true for me.

I'll be cheering you on! GOOD LUCK!!!

Hi,

Just keep saying: I can do it, I can do it, I can do it!

Great goals, so go for them. Bash that keyboard, hammer the words on screen, and hone that ms. 2011 is the year a lot of authors are looking to hit a good run with a publisher. Me too. ;)

These are great goals! I'm with you on finding that agent, you don't have to whisper it... I know you can do it!

I'm going to start edits/revisions on my MS at the end of this month, and I hope to query by March or April.

Good luck to you!

Don't worry, you're not jinxing yourself. By putting it out there you are making the goals solid and real. I have faith that you can achieve each one of them!

I don't think you're cheating.
And if not an agent, I'm sure you'll find a publisher.
You can do it!

Christopher said...

Good luck with all of those!

alexia said...

Go girl! You can say it out loud! I plan to get an agent in 2011, too. Of course, I know that it's something not entirely in my control, but I'll try my very hardest to make it happen. That's all we can do, right?

Overdunne said...

I love your goals! They sound very familiar...:) Good luck and hope it goes well!

Walt M said...

I've set two early goals. I want to finish my current WIP by April (by writing 500 words per day until I get there) and finish editing my old WIP. Those aren't for the year, but it will get me through the first quarter.

I could say one publihsed nonfiction article, but I would be cheating, too. (I have one scheduled for June.)

Rachna Chhabria said...

Great goals! And I am sure you will achieve them.

I want to finish my current WIP too by the end of this month and hopefully submit it in few months.

All the best, Lydia!

Stephen Tremp said...

You have some great goals! Yay on almost finishing your WIP:)) I just finished my rough draft and am letting it sit before revisions start.

You have some fine goals. May I suggest concentrating on #4 as much as you possibly can between your other projects?

Lisa Gail Green said...

You can do it!! You can do it!! Don't pressure yourself with specific timelines though. Just be persistent and do your best and it will all happen.

T C Mckee said...

Well I'm glad you've decided to pick goals involving the least amount of stress. Congrats on the journal acceptance! How cool is that! Good luck with every one of your goals. I know you can accomplish every one of them:)

Jai Joshi said...

That's fabulous news that you got a poem accepted to a journal. Congratulations! And it's not at all cheating.

You're goals look like you're going to keep yourself busy this year. Always a good thing. Go for it, girlfriend, and don't look back. Good luck!
