What's your Patronus?

A good friend of mine (and fellow Harry Potter fanatic) asked me the other day, "What shape would your Patronus Charm be?"

(For those of you who haven't read HP, the Patronus Charm is a magic spell that conjures up a protective image of an animal that wards off happiness-sucking creatures called Dementors. I suppose in real life, Dementors manifest as the IRS, people who steal your parking space, and jeans that magically shrank a whole size since last week, but I digress...)

At first I thought, paramecium. It's cool, it's a single cell, it's independent. But what Dementor would be scared by a speck? Plus, it's so geek-sized.

The next thing that popped into my head was a kiwi. Not the fruit, but the flightless bird from New Zealand. Quirky, cute, and quite grounded (literally).

And finally, I thought of the platypus. It lays eggs, has fur, poisonous claws, and a duck-bill. A jack-of-all trades, not classifiable, and certainly a weird thing in this world. Possibly alien.

Yep, people. I'm a platypus.

So what shape would your Patronus be?

Hi Lydia...my Patronus would be an elephant. For several reasons: one they are connected to my favourite God - Lord Ganesha (he has an elephant head on a human body) and two for their strength (Dementors would flee at the sight of an Elephant Patronus charging at them).

Mine would be a Mountain Lion, AKA a Cougar, because that is my Spirit-Animal.

I'm not kidding.

Awesome post Lydia, I LOVE this question. Is it okay if I ask my readers this same thing tomorrow?

Mine would be a beaver -- also my spirit animal.

Big teeth, sharp claws, layers of fat and can fell mighty trees. Plus they live in the water.

Fun post Lydia.

Oh, that's a hard one! It's kinda like the question my son always asks, which is, if you could be any animal - and had to stay that way forever - what would it be? (My answer to him is parrot - because I get to fly, eat fruit, and live a hundred years.) But not really scary enough to be a patronus. Maybe my patronus could be a Komodo Dragon. Just their bacteria-filled saliva has me shivering.

i just discovered your blog...

in response to your questio, i think mine would be in the shape of a snowball.

Hmm... Unapologetically, I would say that my patronus would be a stylized image of myself.
Come what may I will be myself, nothing expresses my inner me better than myself. I desire to be true to myself... No animal better expresses that than the one that the one that I am.

Hmm...no idea. I'd want to say dear but I would like to be a be a hawk or dolphin :) Adventurous, fun, and hopefully friendly!

I'm going with a red-tailed hawk. =o)

Great answers!
Rachna, I have a special place in my heart for Ganesha, the Remover of Obstacles.

Matt, I'd love for you to post this! Let's see what other answers people come up with.

Jonene, the Komodo freaks me out too. Great choice.

Hi Runaway bride! The Florida loving Dementors would definitely run from that one!

Alesa, I love your choice. It's perfect, isn't it? :)

Saumya, and BE, Love hawks! Ah, I can't keep commenting all day. Must go to work!

Not being a Harry Potter fan *shock, horror* the concept of a patronus is a new one to me but I must say I like the idea.
I'd choose the fox because it's sly, very quick, energetic, independent and cute, just like me :)

Matthew Rush said...

Awesome. Thanks Lydia!

Alesa Warcan said...

Perfect? Maybe.. Though it's kind of cheating. : j

I can picture it though... most of the time the character I would be would only manage to invoke a kind of slow tempered slothful primate who would always appear with it's own silvery ghostly fruit. Instead of listening to me it would eat fruit and spit pips at me.

And only in times of narrative convenience and dramatic effect would the spirit-me come out... And it would be better looking and smarter, but also more sarcastic than I am. Quick to comment on my shortcomings, even as it pulls my bacon from the dementor fire.
Hilarity ensues. : p

Mine would be a Tiger! I'd use it every weekend in the fall on college football Saturdays. GEAUX TIGERS!!! :)

Janet Johnson said...

My patronus? My son tells me I'm a bear because I'm long and straight. ;) Guess I'll go with that.

Samantha VĂ©rant said...

Dementors could be agents who send out form rejections. Just saying!

Mine would be a monkey. My mom had me believing that they adopted me from the zoo when I was a little girl, and I was really a monkey with my hair shaved off. I seriously believed it for days til she told me the truth! She really was a good mom, but was trying to amuse herself. :)

Stephanie McGee said...

I think either a horse or an otter. Unsure.

Carol Kilgore said...

An eagle. For sure.

Meredith said...

Haha, I think mine would be a cute little dog. Just something very happy :)

Tricia J. O'Brien said...

Since a Patronus protects by reflecting joy, hopes, happiness in the face of darkness, I think I'll go with a hawk. Every time I see one above me, my heart soars.

lbdiamond said...

LOL! Great post!

I'd either be a horse (cuz I like 'em & I was born in the year of the horse & therefore have some flightyness to me) OR a sloth because I can laze about like no other. If my Patronus was a sloth, Dementors would probably just get bored and go away. Hahaha!

I want you to know yours is the only blog this morning that has the word "paramecium" in it. I think you deserve and award for that.

Have to think about the shape of my Patronus. Maybe a white egret?

Tory M said...

My patronus would probably either be a wolf (they're beautiful creatures), or (because of my Chinese year and b/c I write about them - or rather will be writing about them again in an upcoming WIP) a dragon.

Yat-Yee said...

Good question. Mine would be some sort of a tiger-wolf-dolphin hybrid, I think.

The Red Angel said...

I completely LOLed my head off when you said paramecium! xP

My Patronus would be either a turtle or a monkey. I have an infatuation with both, plus monkeys are my Chinese Zodiac sign!

Ha, a platypus! That's so great (as are your other ponderings before you landed upon platypus).

My Patronus would definitely be a fierce, lithe, blue-green DRAGON that has iridescent wings and glittering scales. :)

You writers are so used to interesting words. However, they scare me sometimes.

I've no idea what mine would be. Probably a cow with huge horns. Or maybe a lioness.

This is so awesome! I think mine would be a chimpanzee. I just think they are really cute and fun-loving and super smart. But they will bust your a$$ if you try and mess with them. I like that.

Lisa Gail Green said...

I think mine would be a parrot.

A lobster. A really big one. Think about it. So you are attacking me and all of a sudden a lobster made of light gets in your way. There is really nothing you can do in that situation.

A tiger - preferably a Siberian male.
Unless I'm in the water - then I'd want a great white.

Angela Felsted said...

A platypus, how quirky and fun. I don't know what I'd be. Maybe a giant unicorn or something. But that's not very scary.

Sondrae Bennett said...

Hmmm...well my favorite animal is a donkey but I don't think it really represents me.

I worked with horses for years so maybe a horse.

Or a dog, because I'm loyal and protective of my friends and family.

M Pax said...

The jeans vortex is scarier than a dementor, isn't it? :)

Can we pick fictional beasts? I'd go with Gamera.

If not, a panther.

Hanny said...

Ah, my totem. It's a wolf. It's interesting how often I have this conversation with people. Everybody seems to have a kinship with an animal.

The Words Crafter said...

I didn't know they had poisonous claws!!! Cool :)

Hmmmm, mine would probably be a dust bunny, but I'd like a phoenix.

This was fun, thanks!

Jemi Fraser said...

I've always loved wolves so I think that would be my patronus - my backup fave is a silver back gorilla - great question! :)

Colene Murphy said...

A KIWI!?! Cutest Patronus EVER!! Platypuses are freaky, so that would be a great, intimidating one!

CailinMarie said...

this is fun. I adore Harry Potter and have wondered about my patronus in the past- I always think of a big cat first - like the jaguar - but it doesn't quite fit and then I move into flight- perhaps a falcon or an owl- but more likely I'm a sea turtle. There is something about carrying one's house on one's back that suits me-
I came upon your blog via JJ at the Disconnected Writer-

What a fun idea to think about what your patronus would be!! I think I need to figure out mine now...

Mine is definitely an elephant.
I am not a slow lumbering giant, but there is a lot of elephant in me. And I love being the boss woman around!

A skua. Or an albatross.

Mine's a hedgehog - small a prickly and curls up in a ball when things get scary! Just so long as dementers don't start taking on the form of juggernauts - then I'll be small and prickly and flat!

A platypus! I've never seen 1, just pictures. I looked 'em up & they're from Australia & you like birds from neighboring New Zealand so maybe you should take a vacation there.

I like a lot of animals so I don't know which type I can relate to the best.

a paramecium is hysterical. even that you thought of that is a clear sign of a rich imagination at work.

Possibly a dog. I'm protective and fiercely loyal. On the other hand, I'm a loner. Hmmm. Maybe I'm a opossum. LOL

A lioness or a tiger.

Lydia, I think only you could think up such original patronus charms.

And I'm so glad I'm not the only person who wonders "What patronus would I be?"

I have no idea what I'd be though. Still thinking about it. Hey, this is an important decision.

Tiger, it think or a ferret.

Hmm...interesting question. I think mine would be a lion. I'm not lion-ish at all, but I still really love them.

What a fun question! My patronus would probably be a horse. They have been both my downfall and my salvation!

Kari said...

I think mine would be a wolf... A little less original than a platypus, but I guess we don't get to pick what our patronus is :)

A mongoose! Don't underestimate this little feline (yes, it's classed in the same order as cats and tigers!)--they are brave and deadly, and known to kill venomous cobras!

I love this post. I'd vote it the best post of the year in all of blogland! You are so cool.

My patronus is probably a pillbug or a louse, though I'd rather a coyote, but I'm just not that cool. :p

Vicki Rocho said...

The platypus has poisonous claws?????? I didn't know!

I just went through the thinking out loud phase. I'm gonna make my patronus a big ol' mother bear
