Social Mediocre

For this week's Sisterhood of the Traveling Blog, I've asked the gals to answer this question:

What kinds of social media do you use, and why? Twitter? Blogging? FB?

Well, I blog (duh) and I Facebook, but my FBing is pretty tame. I mean, the most interesting thing I've posted this year is the wild turkey that showed up in my back yard. I thought that would impress my old friends in NY. And then they told me, "Er, we have wild turkeys here too."

Ah well.

Truth be told, I can hardly manage this blog. I try really my best to visit every person who leaves a comment and that can take a lot of time. See my time commitments over yonder on my sidebar? They really do take up 25 hours a day.

Someday I might Twitter and FB in earnest. But right now if I did that, I'd feel like Bilbo Baggins when he held onto the Ring of Power too long.

"I feel like butter scraped over too much bread."

So. Do you guys FB? Tweet? Blog? Vlog? Other? All of the above?

If you missed it, check out Laura's post from last week, and stay tuned for Danyelle and Deb's post in the next weeks!

Twitter eats my lunch. And FB is an accident waiting to happen.

My blog is my main platform. Sending out waves of good Karma is my second. :-)

Yep. Sometimes I feel I'm spread too thin. I twitter. (sort of) And I blog. And I tie to the twitter and the blog to my FB. BUT it's this whole blog thing that gets a little hectic.

I kind of forgot about Facebook when I finally caved to Twitter. I actually don't tweet that much, but regardless, following everyone else and the links they tweet is a time sucking habit!! It's informative, but also distracting. I recommend avoiding the temptation as long as possible :-) ... you do a fabulous job here anyways!

I try to race through Twitter and FB, but they are a time-suck.
Btw, I have an award for you over at my blog!

Mostly I just blog and visit blogs. I do have a FB page, but I haven't actually written anything on it. It's mainly for keeping up with the people I'm 'friends' with are doing. I also have a livejournal page and one over at myspace, but I don't do anything with those either.

And don't get me started on Twitter. Seriously, I don't want to start Twittering (or is it tweeting?). Because once I start, I'll probably become an addict and never get anything done.

I have fb and twitter but rarely use either. I used to fb before blogging and once in awhile I will post my blog on fb. I heard writers should tweet 2x a day and fb once a day. Maybe if I was promoting a book I would follow this networking rule.

I use facebook mainly for family but post my blogs onto it too. My blog is my main writing platform. I just started Twitter. It's fun so far, but may be a little time sucky as I feared. Just need to manage my time more effectively really. Stick to my schedule!
I can't imagine how many ways you are stretched with all of your responsibilities!

I blog and love it very much. I FB and enjoy that too. The whole Twitter thing is hard cause I'm not down with all the mashing lingo. But I am starting to get addicted. I call myself a twit but I know the correct term is tweet. And these are all things I said I'd never do as an aspiring writer.

I use Twitter in spurts... I'll post 5 things one day, and then not touch it for a week... not on purpose, but there's just not enough time!!!

FB is a communications tool for me, above all. I mostly use it for making plans with family & friends, or hearing announcements from others that I don't see often (such as family overseas). It's a practical thing, and I don't have time to waste bumming around on it! LOL.

That's not to say I don't wish that I did have that extra time... *looks off wistfully*

I hear you about the time commitment. This is my social life, not that that's a bad thing. I like my blogging friends and facebook can be fun sometimes. I've yet to try twitter. I don't think I have the time.

I can just about blog but even then I may have to re-think my blogging time next year - there just isn't enough time! :-) And my bloggin is in danger of overwhelming all else!! Fun and addictive though it is for me!!

So I am in AWE with everyone else able to tweet and blog and facebook and do all sorts of other social networking stuff and still hold down a full time job, raise the kids, do housework, take the dogs out for a walk!!

Take care
x

i do all three....and i know what you mean about it taking up so much time. my days are busy and i feel bad when i can't return every read/comment. i've been particularily bad about that recently. hopefully after the holidays things will slow down!

Mainly I just blog. I have a FB page, but only visit it to wish happy B-day to friends. I also have a twitter account, but can't seem to get the hang of that. I can only tweet at night, so I feel like I miss out on a lot. But I love my blogging and blog buddies.

"Like butter ... scraped over too much bread." Great line, too bad it's not in the book.

I totally hear you. Working 50 hours a week leaves little time for writing. Luckily I can at least read blogs at work (shhhh).

I blog, tweet & FB. But like you, I also have a million other things I do each day. So I consolidate where I can, my tweets flow to my FB, I have all my blog posts set up to auto feed to FB and Twitter. I'm also not too hard on myself around blogging, I have a goal of 3x a week and if I can do more, great, if not, I don't stress about it. But Twitter is where I hang out the most just because, it's so easy! Random one-liners and I'm set to go!

Carol Kilgore said...

I'm so with you. Blogging takes all the social media time I have - and then some. But I love doing it, too.

Rachna Chhabria said...

Lydia, I blog twice a week: tuesdays and fridays. Though I am on FB I don't regularly update my status, I just reply to people and add the links of my blog there.

Meredith said...

Yep, the blog is really all I can keep up with. I tried Twitter, but I feel like that can take up a ton of my time trying to keep up with conversations, and I'd rather spend that time writing!

Erin Cole said...

I don't twitter, and have told my husband to hang me if I do, cruise through FB every other day, but blogging...definite time-sucker. Too many people to follow, so I just do what I can. (Bloggers must also realzie that reading is time, and many of us can't waste it on posts about the dinosaur cake they just made for their three-year-old - no offense to those outstanding moms)

With my first published novel tucked into my holster, I'm beginning to dig into live media - book fairs, conferences, a signing in the future, and I'm finding that very rewarding, actually talking to people face to face about writing. Then, I race back to my desk and friend them!

Blogging is enough for me! I don't do Twitter or FB. Plenty to do in the ol' blogosphere w/o adding more time-suckers!

Laura Pauling said...

I blog. I enjoy twitter and tend to do it when I'm writing, here and there. It's not a distraction but helps keeps me focused. Strange, I know.

Like Bilbo, I love that! It does feel that way sometimes! My three favorite social media sites are Twitter, my blog, and Scribblerati. I'm on Facebook but I don't care for it much. It is easy to spread one's self too thin and I'm often guilty of it!

lbdiamond said...

LOL! Yeah, it's tough to keep up with it all. You've got a great blog, though! :D

I blog, but like you I don't "facebook" very often. I tried Twitter, I have m account, but I just hate it so much!
I am addicted to writting websites though. There is some good social interaction on these one usually. The latest one is that Harper Collins authonomy.com ...Im seriously thinking about leaving, being that obsessed cant be good for my health.

I blog and I have a Twitter account - and that's as far as I can stretch before I become totally inefficient!

Krispy said...

I do all three! But FB and Twitter I use mostly for personal stuff. It got into both of them because friends wanted me to try them out. Plus, they were both super new when I joined them (FB was still college only; Twitter before everyone started talking about it). They're both definitely timesucks if I'm not careful, but it's not that bad. I think I used FB more when I was still in school, and mostly when I'm procrastinating. :P

I blog, do a couple of writer forums, and at some point I'm going to vlog. Other than that, I don't have any time!

Lydia, it seems that sooner or later some popular bloggers encounter this challenge. I think it's important to keep a sense of balance in your life. I don't know how you handle all of your activities. I just feel respect.

I try to avoid time-suckers, but I'm probably on both a few minutes every day.

Up for a writing challenge next year? Write1Sub1

I'm signed up on Twitter and FB, but I don't have much time for Twitter. I love blogging though. My favorite part is visitng everyone elses blog!

Hmm, well I THINK I am a blogger. XD

I am a total Facebook nutcase...I don't spend 24/7 on it but I think it's a great way to communicate and network so I use it a lot. I do not tweet though, I think Twitter is a waste of time...it's mainly just status updates from what I gather. :/

All very time consuming, for sure! I visit FB and post every day, trying to read as many people's updates as possible and comment. I do Twitter once in a while. I'd love to do more visiting of blogs and commenting, but that really eats up the time. I just do a post once in a while and hop around to visit some blogs when I can.

I like your comparisons to butter over too much bread and Bilbo Baggins!

I blog...and that's about it. I have a personal FB account, but I'm never on there. I have a Twitter account, but I'm never on there either. Truth be told, I'm afraid of falling into that addiction. I don't have time for that right now.

I think social media is overrated... but that said, I do enjoy reading your blog... and wouldn't have "met" you without it.

I blog and I post random, usually insignificant crap on my Facebook page. But I don't Twitter because I find it silly...

If my facebook were a potted plant, it would be dead - it's so neglected. But I love blogging, although it takes a serious time commitment. I love your blogs, and hope someday you share your secret on how to squeeze in that extra hour a day!

Blogging is a great way to read about people. I really enjoy it. FB is nice because links can be provided to people's blogs or books. I also like looking at pictures on FB & thanks for telling me about the wild turkey as I'll have to check that out. I love looking at animal pictures.

I still don't really understand Twitter but then again, I don't go over there much.

cleemckenzie said...

I'm not very good at this, but I do try to Tweet daily (I need to add that I often fail on that score.) I hit fb when I think about it and I blog. YaLitChat is great for helping promote and I'm there as a Moderator. A 25 hour day sounds good. I could use that hour to sleep.

Holly Ruggiero said...

Oh, I hear you. I’m barely holding on to blogging too.LOL

Chris Phillips said...

I blog, but my facebook is only for me, and I'm pretty sure twitter is either evil or stupid.

DL Hammons said...

I do it all....badly! You know the saying, "Jack of all trades, master of none." I put most of my efforts into the blog, because its the most like actual writing. :)

Gail said...

OMG Lydia, your blogging is sooo much better than mine and I don't have all the responsibilities/commitments you have! I posted today and the previous post was 11/14!!! Of course this IS a busy time of year (HA, that excuse doesn't go far!)

Phoenix said...

I'm best at FB because it takes so little time to "like" someone's status, say hello, put up a new picture, or post something clever. Blogging comes next, because I love keeping up with everyone's stories, and then I tweet too (though not as often as I'd like. I just never sit there and think, "Wow, I should tweet this!"

I have a strict no social media policy on weekends though - no blogs, no Facebook, no tweets. Just catching up with friends face to face and getting myself outdoors as often as possible. :)

Karen Lange said...

I do a little with FB, but the most time is spent with my blog and keeping up with all that entails. No Twitter, had an account but ditched it. Just can't spread myself that thin now...
