When My Muse is a Dominatrix

My muse is a pretty nice gal, usually. She works with me; helps when I need it, pops in to add a few ideas when I'm not looking for them.

A tea-and-toast kind of nice lady.

Except on Monday night. I was working on a new outline for a novel. And okay, so I had a leetle too much caffeine that day. What did my muse do?

She took off her granny cardigan, strapped on some black leather and took out the whip.

Yes, she went all dominatrix on me. I could not fall asleep until 4 AM. Voices and plot lines, subplots and subterfuges, descriptions and world building swirled around and wouldn't let go.

(Just to be clear, I am NOT manic. This just happens once in a while at the beginning of project.)

I'm still recovering from the sleep deprivation. But man, does she crack the whip hard when that happens.

So. Does your muse ever get too tough on ya?

No, but perhaps she should. I could use a strong hand once and awhile.

Sorry, my mind just went off in a whole new direction there...

Yes, once in awhile I go through insomnia secondary to my characters yelling at me all night. :)

This is why I keep a pad of paper at my bedside. When this happens, I scribble enough in the dark to help me remember and then usually I can get back to sleep.

LOL! Oh yeah. All you can do is ride it out. I'll bet you got a lot of work done though.

I wish I had a muse that would get all S&M on me,but that's another story.....

My problem is right now a supporting character just yanked the whip and boots from my muse and is trying to take over my Nano story. So now I'm up in the middle of the night figuring out how to tame her, ha ha! But talk about fun! Great blog. Thanks!

Laura Eno said...

Oh, yeah! It's the best kind. I've learned to write in the dark when my muse wakes me up.
Alex's reply cracked me up. ;)

I need her to. Someone needs to crack the whip so I can get this manuscript done once and for all (I'm almost there!)!

I think it's the other way round for me!!! My muse is so comatosed she's practically asleep! LOL!!!

I love your muse! Can we swap??
:-) Take care

My muse is a man, but yeah. He's been known to do that from time to time. The disturbing part is while I think some peoples' muses might be based on one of their heroes (or heroines)...mine looks like my sociopathic semi-villain. Still trying to figure out how THAT happened. Then again, when he says jump, I'm much more likely to say "how high".

Well, lately my muse hasn't really been a dominatrix but she has been awful NAG. LOL

wow--that happened to me Weds night. I was finishing up the writing portion of my Big Revision and seriously. Up all night.

better today. But now I have to *read* it... :D

Oh, that's too funny! It beats why I was awake at that hour: puking 6 yo. :(

Right now my muse is either on vacation, or whispering so quietly I can barely hear her. I'll send her over to take lessons from your muse!

Holly Ruggiero said...

I love that analogy! Yes, I have those times too and they are great for getting things done but the recovery time is hard.

I think your muse got tired of pestering you at 4 and came to my house. What a little #&$#@ she can be.

Matthew Rush said...

Not lately, but it's amazing when that does happen. Sounds like you got a lot of good stuff done!

Funny 'whip' of inspiration you had!

I hope my muse doesn't get S&M on me - he's a cross between Samuel Jackson and Lewis Black - I call him Sam Black and God help me if he puts on black boots!

lbdiamond said...

LOL, I clicked on the link to your blog and when I saw the drawing I wondered if I clicked the wrong thing! ;)-

No, my muse doesn't get S&M, but she does refuse to let me rest...on the other hand, she makes sure she takes extended vacations when I most need her. Geesh.

Oh dear. I forget that there are some under 18 people looking at this blog.
Suffice it to say Lenny, it means someone is being rather bossy!

Valerie Geary said...

My Muse rarely does that...but when she does, boyhowdylookout!

Jodi Henry said...

Good choice on answers for Lenny. Although he's probably already google searched it.

The post title had me thinking your muse had taken you into a different choice of genres. But it seems she's just whipped you into submission. lol

Nice post.

I wish my muse would do that. she just leaves me to flounder with all the ideas she throws at me.

If I write down what's in my head, she'll leave me alone. Then I don't have to lose more sleep than I already do.

Good luck with your new idea!

My muse is a definite night owl. Unless I really need her, I try not to write at night for that very reason. I am, however, due for a little night writing to work out one tiny problem.

Karen Lange said...

Yes, and it usually hits after a big stretch of laziness. Hope you catch up on your sleep this weekend!

Colene Murphy said...

Your muse needs to call up my muse and crack that whip at her.

My characters (aka my muses) do this to me all the time! They never leave me be and drive me absolutely crazy and are all wearing leather all the time. They attack me with bows, arrows, swords, axes and whips!

They are mean

I feel your pain girl.

My muse remains quiet until I come to a plot twist that she or he, depending on the story, doesn't like. The villain usually wants to tell all manner of unnecessary things which I cut and then I make him go to the corner. Who's the boss!

I posted today about giveaways and contest including my first ever contest. So if you have time come on by.

LOL, love the illustration. My muse hasn't been that insistent in a loooong time. I think it's on indefinite vacation. Half the time I think its laziness is only matched by my own. :P

Mine tends to visit at really bad times. I gotta talk to her about that.... Have you seen her?

Susan Fields said...

I'll bet the caffeine had a lot to do with that. It sure disrupts my sleep when I drink it too late in the day. My muse mostly just visits when I take the dog for a walk in the park, so as long as my sleep's not interrupted, I'm okay. :)

Seductive writing here, in the sense of unleashing that pen with wit and charm.

Heather said...

LOL! That is awesome! My muse is like that often. I've learned to roll with it!

Shellie said...

Lydia, this is so funny. And such an appropriate name for them when they go full on like that. But what does it say about me if I admit (quiet whisper) I like it.

hahahahahaha....love the dominatrix! I've never thought of it like this, let me think....I would say that mine alternates between being a seductress and a very creative ADHD child.

The other morning, while trying to hurry up getting ready for work, these ideas kept popping into my mind and I would catch myself just sitting there, looking and listening....over and over. I was nearly five minutes late for work!

Other times, I will get and idea and it's like bedlam trying to keep up with the different tangents and what ifs and then's and oh, oh, I know, I know's....

Actually, I think my muse has MPD....

Thanks for making me lol!

My muse is always a dominatrix. At Halloween her costume is to wear a flannel bathrobe.

No, but there are days when the muse is in overdrive and I just can't sleep.

And then my wife wants to crack the whip if I don't get some sleep beforew work the next day. :-)

Maria McKenzie said...

What a muse! Mine's not quite that tough. But with all you juggle I can see why she goes a little "wild" sometimes:).

Lynn said...

Love the picture you chose! Right now my muse is quiet, letting me heal from surgery but I hope she's just as fast with the whip as yours when the time is right.

L'Aussie said...

Trust Alex, but I can understand the hot male blood you stirred up there with your whip! Go must! Take in any form, and see it through to the end of the writing rainbow. Great stuff and I hope your project glows in the dark!

Clara said...

Wow I wish my muse went that hard on me! She does, but very rarely. She prefers to punish me slowly. i.e.: Im in the gym or driving the car and then BANG: threads dissolve, ideas come to mind and I cant friggin write them! And she knows I have a bad memory. My muse is eeeevil!

Roland D. Yeomans said...

Sorry about the sleep deprivation. It couldn't have been Saturday night when you would literally have 25 hours that day.

When inspiration comes, it is wise to listen to her because the next day she may sullenly refuse to tell you what was so important.

My muse loves 2am for some reason. I don't.

My muse loves finding me in the shower. I prefer my privacy.

My muse loves parties. I like parties too so let me enjoy them for goodness sake!

OMG this sounds exactly like my muse. She does not leave me the heck alone sometimes!!! I hope you're getting good rest :) 4 a.m. is very rough!

Talei said...

Oh yes!! Mine cracks the whip, throws teacups and seethes...but usually she's right! LOL.

Good luck with the writing. And I just saw the 3 act plot structure below - I always keep this in the back of my mind when writing. I think its a great tool. Thanks for sharing my dear x

I love when things like this happen. When you have to write no matter what. It usually results in the best writing too.
