Hey guys! In honor of Thanksgiving, a list and a confession.
I'm thankful for so many things this year.
My family.
My health.
My job.
My writing.
My home.
My writing.
(And a ton of other things too...)
And I saved one of the best for last--my friends. Old ones, new ones, and all of you guys. I have a lot of new blogging friends, and you guys have welcomed my crazy blogging into your world with open arms. For that, I am very grateful.
Okay, confession time.
*Whispers*
I have never cooked a turkey.
I'm petrified! MCAT, SAT, board exam, board recertification, residency, whatever. Nothing compared to this.
I am afraid of roasting a turkey!
Please send some turkey-roasting luck my way.
Will resume blogging next week. Happy Turkey Day!
If you have a moment, please check out our newest sister, Deb Salisbury, who is posting on her favorite childhood book. Take it away, Deb!

I cheat. I get a small turkey and put it in the crock pot with about a half inch of water. Season it. Throw in a chopped onion. It is de-lish! Of course, that's if you're only cooking for a couple of people.
Happy Thanksgiving, Lydia! Conquer the turkey! :-)
I cooked my first Turkey this year for Canadian Thanksgiving and (*thank goodness*), it turned out really well!! It's scarier than it seems...I was petrified too! Good luck, and Happy Thanksgiving!!
My husband and I had many turkey disasters during our first few years together. Fortunately he's finally figured it out. :)
Have a great Thanksgiving, Lydia!
LOL!! You'll do fine.
HAPPY THANKSGIVING Lydia!! :)
I've only done it once & it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. Thankfully, someone let me know there were things INSIDE the turkey to take out first, whew! I'm sure you'll be fine.
Just don't try to deep-fry. No one wants to have to call the fire department on Thanksgiving & forever be known as "those people who tried to burn their house down" by the rest of the neighborhood.
Shhhhh...nobody wants to admit it, but it's waaaaaay easier than you think! Don't worry!
Happy Thanksgiving!
Shelley
Sending you gobbles of luck with your turkey. You can do it. It's a great deal of fun roasting birds. It really is.
Enjoy.
It's not hard at all! Seriously.
Here's my favorite way to cook them. I preheat the oven to 500. And bake the turkey at 500 for an hour to an hour and half (make sure you butter the skin) until the skin is beautifully brown. This sears the skin and the juices can't evaporate (no basting). Then turn the oven down to 350 and bake until done. I took me 2 1/2 to 3 hours cooking time for a 23 lbs. stuffed turkey. (it cooks much more quickly because with the skin seared, the juices boil under the skin).
Good luck on cooking the turkey. (I never had to cook one either.)
Aww, well I'm thankful for the fact that I found your blog! :) Happy Thanksgiving, Lydia!
Sadly, I've never cooked a turkey either before! I am usually in charge of the desserts, potatoes and macaroni and cheese. :3 best of luck cooking!

Good luck with the turkey; you’ll do fine :)

Lydia, you're not alone! I've never cooked a turkey either and haven't a clue how! :)
Happy Thanksgiving!!!
Somehow with your resume of abilities, I don't think you have anything to be worried about! ;) Have a great holiday!
Good luck with your turkey Lydia! We did our first 2 years ago and have done one every year since. It's really not as hard as it sounds. You will be surprised!!
* And Happy Thanksgiving!!!
You're first turkey! Don't worry you'll do great. Just don't forget to take the neck and other goodies they stuff inside the bird before you cook it. I made that mistake once. Once.
Happy Thanksgiving! I'm very thankful for you too!
its not that hard to cook a turkey just look up a couple recipes and try to stay on em
Good luck! I'm sure you'll do fine. It's just like cooking a turkey, only with stuffing first, and it's a little bigger. *grin*
LOL Don't feel bad. I'm pretty sure I haven't cooked one either. I think I did a chicken once though? Maybe? I seem to have this yucky memory of pulling guts out of a bird. *shudder*
Hope you have a wonderful Thanksgiving, and maybe someone will cook a turkey for you. *grin*
Good luck roasting the turkey! I'm sure that you'll do it just fine, and that you won't have any horror stories to tell next year. ;)
Happy Thanksgiving!
Hey, no worries! I've never done the turkey thing before. My aunts handle that. I usually just go out and buy things. :P You'll do fine!
Happy Thanksgiving!
Oh yes, my fear of dead bird had my whole family in stitches the first year I did dinner. Now the bird and I keep a friendly distance.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Have fun this Thanksgiving, Lydia. I can't help you with turkey cooking (vegetarian) but I'll say that any cooking done nervously always goes wrong. So be fearless!
Jai
Sending you loads of positive first turkey cooking vibes! Good luck!
Have a great Thanksgiving, Lydia.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving! You'll do fine with the turkey...just don't use a surgical knife. ;)
Er... can't help you with the turkey - sorry!! Guess just stick it in the oven and cook for like hours and hours?!?!
:-) HAPPY THANKSGIVING!! Take care

I'm totally stoked for Thanksgiving Ham. That's right, HAM! :D I like turkey, but not nearly as much as other meats. And ham is easy to cook. If you need tips for cooking turkey, though, check out the American Test Kitchen. They have some great tips and tricks for you, and they make it WAY easy.
Good luck, and happy turkey day :D
Go here and follow the directions. It's foolproof. And it's not even my mom's way - LOL.

I've never cooked a turkey either. Good luck to you.
Good luck and relax. :) Have a great Thanksgiving.
I've only cooked one and amazingly, it turned out really well.
Good luck and have a safe and wonderful Thanksgiving!!!
Happy Thanksgiving!! Good luck with the turkey! I've never roasted one either and I'd be a bit scared too. But I'm sure it'll turn out delicious! Enjoy! :)
I've never cooked one either! Thank God, my husband is willing to do it!
Oh c'mon - use a turkey bag! They are awesome - gut the turkey, shove him in the bag, twist tie, cut a few holes in it - then put it in a roasting pan and follow the cooking guidelines on the bag. A perfect and truly delish Mr. Turkey everytime! Gobble gobble and Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
Good luck! I'm an Aussie, so have nooooo idea how to roast a turkey at all. Good luck, and God bless your turkey, and all who sail in her ;)
The key to a great baked turkey is to buy a Butterball. It's pre-basted, perfectly salted and has the plastic pop-up thermometer that tells you when it's done. You can get as fancy as you want, but for me, I just take out the giblets (check both cavities) wash it, salt it, and throw it in the oven. It's scary the first time, but the next year, watch out world! Happy Thanksgiving, best of luck, and I'll watch for your posts next week.
You know, I only cooked my first one EVER a year or two ago. Tip! Make sure you take at ALL the pouches of giblets, neck, etc...all that good stuff. I missed the pouch in the neck cavity and kept wondering why it was taking soooo long to get to the right temperature, lol! Otherwise - follow directions, cover, season as needed, BASTE and enjoy! You'll do just fine - :)
Happy T-day to you!
It's turkey frozen dinner for me today as every Thanksgiving. Gypsy, my cat, doesn't know the difference with her share.
I'm at work today bacterial sampling platelets, filtering blood, and delivering needed blood to rural hospitals. The center is echo-empty today but for the lone ranger. Happy Holidays!
Happy Thanksgiving, Lydia. Sending lots of Turkey Roasting luck your way.
Happy Thanksgiving, Lydia!
My husband cooks ours. This year we got a 19-lb bird for free because my daughter works in a market. Can't beat free! When I cook turkey, I use a breast and put it in the crock-pot with a packet of onion soup mix and a can of whole cranberry. It turns out really good.
Well, nobody can do everything. :D
Happy Thanksgiving! :)
Put your fears aside. Cooking a turkey is very easy! I guess it seems intimidating because it's so large. I was petrified, too, until I learned that you just, basically, stick it in the oven:).
Happy Turkey Day!
Happy Thanksgiving! Hope all your cooking adventures were successful:)
Sorry I'm a day late for the luck sending. I hope your turkey turned out awesome and that you had a lovely day. (Well, the lovely day part is for no matter how the turkey turned out.)
=o)
I never cooked a turkey either. I let wifey do that. She's the pro. Good luck with yours and have a great holiday!
Hope your turkey cooking went well! You'll have to let us know how it went.
Oh, WOW, LYDIA!

You would be surpised at how many people I know who have not cooked a turkey. I'm sure it will all go well :)

LOL! Lydia, I have never cooked a turkey either! We don't celebrate Thanksgiving where I am but my husband and I are planning to have turkey for Christmas...I'm really worried about the result!
Nice post...sorry I'm late - happy thanksgiving! :)
Hey facebook said we should be friends so i came here instead. How did the turkey experiment go?
I recommend you do tofurkey instead of turkey, Lydia :)
I made a chicken instead, never made a turkey myself either. I'm yours turned out wonderfully though!
Oh heck, I've never cooked a turkey either, and I don't know that I ever will... that's one thing I plan to avoid as LOOOOONG as possible. And if it ever comes down to me cooking it myself... well, let's just say I'm of the opinion that pizza is JUST as festive. LOL.
Congratulations on reaching 500 followers so far ahead of schedule! That is quite an achievement and well-deserved. I have no turkey-roasting tips, as I'm more of an eater than a cook--but I'm sure your turkey turned out great.
Happy Thanksgiving Lydia! I enjoyed your post. I don't cook turkey!
