My Book Pile = My Brain?

The other day Meredith blogged about her pile of books needing a bookshelf. We need a gigantic bookcase at our house too. Like, a year ago.

Meredith's pile is neat and sweet. Mine exists in a lonely closet of our basement and appears as if a good old-fashioned Nebraskan tornado hit it:

(FYI, I only showed you the neatest part of the mess. I have some degree of decorum.)

I can't help it! I go in that little room and rummage around for books and leave a wake of utter chaos behind me. And then I just shut the door.

Let's just hope this isn't representative of how my brain is organized.

Are you guys neat freaks with your books?

Also, don't forget this weeks's Sisterhood of the Traveling Blog post by Danyelle Leafty on her favorite childhood book. If you missed them, I posted last week, and Laura posted the week before. Next week stay tuned for some words from our new Sisterhood sister, Deb Salisbury!

It looks like a tornado hit my bedroom. It's not as bad as some other places, but it's still terrible. However, my bookshelf is super neat, and I rearrange it every week or so. It's about the only corner of my room that is neat. :P

I can exist in either environments, but the Mrs. is neat so I conform.

Ooh, but you have some awesome titles in the pile. I hear you on the shelf issue. You've inspired me. I've been meaning to blog about my book collection. Now I shall. You'll find I have shelves...um, and yeah, I have piles. *sighs*

My TBR books live in one place, my Bookanista reads in another. Yea, I am that OCD! :)

I don't have a bookshelf right now either! I'm *supposed* to get my dream giant bookshelf as a Christmas gift, but seeing how cold yours are on the floor reminds me of my poor cold books sitting in the basement of my central Illinois home. Actually some of those books you have are kind of dark and they may like it...just saying. You're the doctor, though, you know what's acceptable.

It's not that bad lol!

I'm kinda a freakazoid and have them all on shelves. Can't have them bent ya know. Library teacher liked me :)Problem is the hutch got taken over by books and to heck with the nick nacks!

This is the exact reason I bought myself a Nook. My TBR pile was overtaking all the free space in my bedroom (and I HAVE a bookshelf already).

So many books to read, so little time to organize them.

Mine is a mess, too! (And I have no illusions....my brain is the same.)

My room is pretty clean right now (at least the book part) but only because I moved in three months ago.
Otherwise, actually, my books are still clean at home. That's the one thing my mother didnt complain about :P

Hey, it looks like my 9-month-old has been visiting you!

My shelves used to be total order. I had romance in one section, young adult stories in another, Then Classics, the rest of my fiction, and nonfiction books in other sections. After that, they were alphebetized by author, then title.

But these days, I'm lucky if the books even make it to the shelves! Kids have a way of creating total chaos.

We ran out of bookcase space years ago. Last night Hubby just moved the TBR pile into THREE plastic tote boxes.

I use my closet to organize my books instead of my clothes. It's a beautiful closet! I read like 6 books at a time and they're everywhere or in random piles. So, I'm only unorganized while I'm reading! lol

Angela Felsted said...

Wow, you must love books or something. I try to keep mine neat but my kids always use them to build buildings and stuff. So keeping them neat is work. It doesn't really happen.

Charli Mac said...

OMG, this is too funny. The hubby finally converted my twelve-year old's unused playroom into an office for me. It has a built in shelf of my current fave books but childhood books seem to be lost, I have them in memory only. *Sniff sniff*

KatieO said...

LOL - mine looked similar, but I just went through and sorted the "keepers" and put them on a shelf. The rest are in a box already in my car to go to the Library book sale.

Share the love. Share a book!

My books are all over the place: on my nightstand, in the closet, in a trunk by the foot of the bed. And those are just the ones I haven't read yet!

I have five six foot bookcases in my basement, four three foot book cases and one loot bookshelf in my bedroom.
I am insanily careful with my book. I won't crack the spine, I don't bend the pages.

Recently I discovered this thing called the library... did you know you can borrow books, read them and give them back? awesome. Recently my book shelves haven't had any new additions to it. oh well. But hey free books. My tax dollars are finally paying off!

Lindsay (a.k.a Isabella) said...

My room is like a library now. I did use to have boos stacked everywhere until I got a new bookcase. Now that's full, I fear the oile will spill onto the floor. lol.

Most of my books are still in boxes at the moment (yay the endless move that seems to have no ending). But I've been much neater since getting my kindle since it keeps everything neat for me!

I love the pic of your neatest pile of books!!! Wonderful!!

My bookshelves are jammed with books in no particular order and there are chaotic piles in boxes. Yikes!!!

Take care

I have wooden crates and milk crates full lined floor to ceiling in the basement. Genre categorized by box but not alphebetized. I'm not that wired.

Laura Eno said...

Mine are on Kindle now...very neat and tidy. LOL!

Our books are neat--we don't have enough floor space for my books, my husband's books, and our four kids' books. We're an eight bookcase family. (And 3/4 of my husband's book are at work, not to mention the boxes of books in the attic.) Maybe it's time to buy a Kindle/Nook.

Matthew Rush said...

I'm sad to say that my books are all in boxes in the garage. We just don't have room, but one day I will move into my dad's old house, where there is a handmade bookshelf that covers an entire wall!

Yes, it rules.

Bossy Betty said...

My books are always on shelves or on my nightstand. They look at me all the time and wonder why they are not on my lap instead of that darn computer. They are starting to talk of revolution....

Carol Kilgore said...

I'm not neat in everything, but I am somewhat neat with books. I don't know why.

Tricia J. O'Brien said...

Ha! That is clearly not how your brain is organized or you wouldn't write this amazing blog with such consistency and interesting posts.
My bookpiles are everywhere. I get a new bookcase, fill it up, and then start piling the overflow again on any available surface. :D

Jackee said...

I hate when I go looking for one thing and utterly destroy the piles/shelves of things! How I wish we could all have our own personal libraries... maybe my kids will give up their bedrooms.... :o)

Erin Cole said...

I love it when books take over a room...it actually makes me think I'm accomplishing something!

Lo said...

haha one of my favourite means of procrastination is organizing my books!! We have one massive shelf that can't keep up with all my purchases...I alternate between organizing piles by genre, colour, and alphabetical :-) It's my dream to have a house full of bookshelves

Krispy said...

I'm not a neat freak about anything. :P My books tend to be in stacks, but they are all over the place. It's why I fear I will one day lose the ones I get from the library; I have to make sure I remember where I put them!

Meredith said...

Haha, ok, yes, I'm a neat freak about my books. But my closet is a total clutter fest, and I've always thought my brain was like that--jumping from one thing to another.

Lydia, I just bought a bookcase a few months ago. And now I need another one. It's going to be the curse of my life - but it hurts so good.

I'm a near freak; I don't have a bookshelf for my TBR or anything, but there's a stack for books I really want to read, (usually ones I've been longing for, for a while) books that are Science Fiction, and books that I took out of the library because they looked interesting.

Heather said...

I have to admit, I'm a neat freak when it comes to my books. I have seperate shelves for different genres and authors!

Shannon Whitney Messenger said...

I *just* cleaned up my mess last weekend. It took ALL day and involved packing up all my old college textbooks and some of the books I'm just not reading right now to clear space for my TBR pile and such. There's still some chaos cause I'm perfecting the organization system. But it's much better than it was.

Ugh, why don't all houses come with libraries! No wonder no one reads. :)

My stuff is strewn everywhere, and that's the way I best write...and live. Check out my On the Nightstand at www.pattilacy.com for a real-life example!!!

And live messily.
After all, life IS messy.

Neat freak. Dusted frequently to keep the allergies at bay. Do you worry about silverfish.?

Neat freak here, too. I have lot's of pretty piles of books - like decorations in my living room, sunroom, bedroom. :)

The Happy Whisk said...

Hi Lydia - thanks for joining my blog. Nice to meet you. Happy writing. I'll be back to see what you're up to.

lbdiamond said...

Lol! I do have bookshelves, but I've given up keeping them neat. Now, piles of books set every which way take up every spare inch of space, horizontally and vertically. ;)

Susan Fields said...

We have a wall of bookshelves in the family office, so that keeps all my books nice and neat. If it weren't for those shelves, I shudder to think what would happen.

Melissa said...

I'm good at keeping my books neat but this is pretty much how my clothes end up all the time. Though not in a separate room... they end up all over my floor!

B.E. Sanderson said...

Most of my books are for the 'store' so I kinda have to be a neat freak or I'll never find anything. The books I have for personal use are either stacked semi-neatly on shelves in the case of books I've already read, or piled on the floor for my TBR pile.

My daughter on the other hand is living in a sea of books that looks like your picture. (And half of her piles are on her bed - where she sleeps tucked between the piles.)

Rachna Chhabria said...

I am a complete neat freak where my books are concerned. They are stacked in perfect order.

Elizabeth Varadan aka Mrs. Seraphina said...

I always MEAN to be neat. Periodically I go on the rampage and tidy up all my books and a stranger coming to the house would think I'm really a neat person. A day later, things start to look a bit askew. The next day, even moreso. And before I know it, my writing corner looks a lot like your closet. Probably like the part you didn't show us!

LTM said...

my book pile is extremely neat... :D And I get the itch if I have too many books waiting for me to read them! ergh. I guess I'm anal like that~ :D

Elana Johnson said...

Um, hardly. Mine are in two tall stacks on my card table where I do all my writing. It's sort of pathetic, actually.

Jonene Ficklin said...

Heaven's, no! We have books in most rooms and I'm so glad! My kids and hubby read, and my son works at a book store. Life is good!

I got to the point where I give almost all of my books to Friends Of The Library as the sell them and use the money to sponsor local family oriented events.

Hi! I'm a new follower. I too have books lying in piles all around the house... one big pile in my closet, one by my bed, some on the dresser.

The Words Crafter said...

I have 2 bookshelves in my office. The shelves I try to keep neat looking. It's also where I display my nick-nacks.

But I also have books packed in totes, sitting on nightstands, under the daybed, in my bookbag and my backpack, on the bathroom counter, the dresser, in the dining room, on the coffee table, on the bench/coat rack, in my car, in the trunk of my car, and in my little cubby/cabinet at work. Yeah....I could use some organization or a giant bookcase....

My books are all over my room and my house -- but I do try to tidy them up when I can, because I like seeing books all organized. I definitely do need a bookcase, though!
